ISIPO

The Icelandic Intellectual Property Office (ISIPO) is a government agency under the auspices of the Minister of culture, innovation and higher education. The Office began operations on 1 July 1991 under the name of the Icelandic Patent Office. On 1 July 2019, the name of the office was changed and is now called The Icelandic Intellectual Property Office.

The organisational structure of the ISIPO Office is divided into two main divisions: the Operations Division and the Intellectual Property and Administration Division, in addition to the Office of the Director General. The activities of ISAC (Icelandic Board for Technical Accrediatation) also fall under the institution, but ISAC is professionally and financially separate from other operations.

The structure and scope of the office are defined by Advertisement No. 187/1991 and Regulation No. 188/1991. The role of the office is to administer matters relating to patents, trademarks, design protection and other similar rights as provided for in laws, regulations, and international agreements on the protection of intellectual property rights in the field of industry.

The office is responsible for providing individuals, organizations, and companies with information and guidance regarding industrial intellectual property rights. The office must also promote access to the new technology and knowledge contained in registered intellectual property rights for the general public. The IP gazette is published regularly for this purpose.
