The National Archives of Iceland Approves the ISIPO's First Electronic Submission

04. March 2026ISIPO
The National Archives of Iceland has approved the preservation version of the Icelandic Intellectual Property Office's (ISIPO) electronic case archive for the period 2014–2018. This marks the Office's first electronic submission and represents a significant milestone in its electronic records management.
The archive comprises over 54,000 cases created during the period. Under Icelandic law, public bodies are required to transfer their case archives for permanent preservation, with each electronic records management period covering a maximum of five years.
Preparation for the submission took several years and was led by the ISIPO's records manager. All cases from the period were reviewed and their documents prepared for electronic submission, including conversion into appropriate preservation formats. A preservation version was then produced, which will be held in permanent custody by the National Archives of Iceland.
The submission process went very smoothly, and the approval of the preservation version confirms that the submission meets all applicable requirements. It has been noted that it is rare to find so few deviations in a case archive of this size.
The next step is preparing the electronic submission for the period 2019–2023, with delivery expected in early 2027. The experience gained through this first submission will inform the continued development and strengthening of records management at the ISIPO.
